Community Resources

LOCATION: The community of Big Lake is less than 15 minutes north of Wasilla off the Parks Highway.  It is just far enough away from the big city to offer the peace and quiet of country life, yet close enough to provide all the necessary and desired amenities.  The soon to be completed 4-lane and lighted highway will shorten the travel time while also making it safer.

COMMUNITY:  The population of Big Lake is about 3,500, and has been growing rapidly over the last decade.  Once most popular as a recreation destination, it has become more and more a location of choice for permanent residence.  Its compact core area contains all that one would expect of a thriving small town and its geographic position shields it from the harsh winds experienced in Palmer and Wasilla.

SHOPPING:  Almost all business activity occurs within several blocks of the core area.  Here you will find the grocery store, gas stations, restaurants, banking, hair salons, video store, gift shops, the Chamber of Commerce and 4 churches just minutes from the Oasis.  Auto repair, boat rental, tax service and dentist office are also available.

PUBLIC SERVICES:  The core area of the community also contains the post office, library, fire station, elementary school, airport, two borough parks and two state parks. In addition, the Lion’s Clubs Recreation Center offers ice skating, soccer and a location for community events as well as the meeting place of the community council.  The senior center is located just a few miles from town at the Parks Highway.

EVENTS:  Big Lake hosts numerous events during the year.  There are summer and winter fishing derbies, the start of the annual Iron Dog snowmobile race to Nome along with many other races.  “Saturday in the Park” and the Christmas tree lighting and parade are recent new events.
